Glutino Berry Sensible Beginnings Cereal

Glutino Berry Sensible Beginnings Cereal

I was probably the world’s biggest fan of Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal pre-Celiac. I’m talking a box every 2 days. I thought I’d never be able to relish such flavor again. BUT at Whole Foods, I discovered this Glutino gem in the gluten free aisle. It had a hefty price tag, but the only thing swirling in my mind was, “Can this possibly be a replacement for my beloved cereal?!”

Taste: If Frosted Flakes or Special K had a baby with organic produce, you would have this cereal. INCREDIBLE. The flakes are large and coated in a semi-sweet, sugary glaze. The strawberries are extremely fresh and flavorful–taste just like you picked them from a bush. There were a lot in this particular box, but I have seen that some don’t have as many. The cereal doesn’t lose any of its flavor in milk either.

Texture: Extremely crunchy and fresh. The flakes remain crisp, crunchy, never soggy, and sturdy even after being immersed in milk. Kind of tears up the roof of your mouth, like Cap’n crunch, but it’s a good pain haha. The strawberries are soft and dissolve when they hit your tongue since they’re freeze-dried. Great way to mix up the textures.

Smell: Inititally, like Frosted Flakes. Semi-sugary but not sickeningly sweet. But then a wave of strawberries hits you–totally droolworthy.

Gluten-filled counterpart: Kashi Strawberry Fields, Special K Red Berries, or Frosted Flakes with a fruity addition

Price: $4.79-5.99 per box

Nutrition: Low fat, about 3g of protein per serving, and 2g of fiber. It’s also fortified with 10 vitamins and minerals, so you’re not just eating cardboard. High on sugars at 15g per serving, but I’m thinking the majority of it comes from the freeze dried strawberries.

Ingredients: CORN MEAL, LONG GRAIN WHITE RICE, SUGAR, FREEZE-DRIED STRAWBERRY SLICES, SALT, SOY LECITHIN, VITAMINS AND MINERALS: ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), ALPHA TOCOPEROLS, REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), THIAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), VITAMIN A PALMITATE, FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12.

Overall: One of the best cereals (gluten free or not) that I’ve ever eaten. SO much texture, so much flavor, and so similar to my favorite cereal of the past. The price may be up there, but nonetheless, I highly, HIGHLY recommend; it’s BEYOND worth it.
