Kinnikinnick “K-Kritters” Chocolate Animal Cookies
Kinnikinnick makes many gluten free food products, ranging from breads, to cookies and crackers, to pizza and breakfast items. I’ve never really had the opportunity to try many of their items because my local stores carry VERY limited quantities of a handful of their products. So, when I saw these, I jumped at the opportunity and decided to give them a whirl. Who doesn’t like chocolate AND fun shaped animals? 🙂
Taste: Just like a crispy animal cracker. Nice chocolate flavor without being overpoweringly sweet. It was more of a light sweetness, very subtle. It did leave a somewhat interesting after taste though…hard to describe it. Not chemically, but not a satisfying chocolate.
Texture: Crunchy and sturdy texture, but a bit dry. They didn’t disintegrate whenever you bit into them, which was really nice compared to many other gluten free cookies I’ve tried, though. I do recommend having them with almond milk or a drink to balance out the dryness. I loved the animals as well! What was fantastic is that the majority were not crumbled and in shards. I was a bit biased towards the elephants 🙂
Smell: A mix of unsweetened baking cocoa and hot chocolate. Very appetizing!
Gluten-filled counterpart: Chocolate Teddy Grahams
Price: $3.50-$4.00 per box
Nutrition: I’m not a fan that the first ingredient is sugar, but they’re cookies, what else should I expect? I love that there’s 12 cookies per serving, I don’t like it when companies only have 1 or 2 per serving.
Ingredients: Sugar, Pea Starch, Potato Starch, non-Hydrogenated Shortening (palm fruit and/or canola), White Rice Flour, Water, Tapioca Starch, Icing Sugar, Glucose, Cocoa Powder, Pea Protein, Modified cellulose, Salt, Vanilla Extract, Pea Fiber, Caramel (color), Inulin, Soy Lecithin, Sodium Bicarbonate
Overall: Not bad! The only downsides were sugar level, fiber amount, and aftertaste, but the flavor and smell was spot on. Recommend having it with milk or another liquid to help counteract some of the chalkiness. All things aside, I was a fan and would totally buy them again.
